The large number of construction in railway lines all across the country expanded rapidly across the subcontinent by connecting the major cities and ports. Hence, Steam engine-based locomotives played an important role in industrialization, enabling the efficient transport of goods and raw materials.

Electrification and Modernization (1950-1990s)

After independence, Our Indian Railways embarked on a journey of electrification and modernization to enhance safety, operational efficiency and also for providing comfort to the passengers. The very first electrified railway line between Bombay Victoria Terminus (now Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus) to Kurla was inaugurated in 1925.

Introduction of Diesel locomotives (1960s-1980s)

In order to reduce the operational costs, Indian Railways had introduced diesel locomotives alongside steam and electric traction. The introduction of Dieselization gained popularity in the 1960s to 1970s. This shift resulted in greater flexibility in operation, especially on non-electrified routes.

High Speed rail initiatives (1990s-present)

Nowadays people want everything fast. Hence, in the quest for faster and more efficient transportation, Indian Railways had embarked on ambitious high-speed rail initiatives starting in the 1990s.
