Train Connectivity in North East India

In the near future in the coming years, the rail system is set to link even Sikkim. Its railway system already connects the cities of Tripura, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh. Five important Indian Railways projects will provide an enormous boost for the North-East in the near future:

Jiribam-Imphal Railway Development: Manipur’s capital city, Imphal is set to be linked via Indian Railways via the 111-kilometer-long Jiribam-Imphal rail project. The railway project is scheduled to be completed by the end of March 2022.

Bhairabi Sairang Railway Project: The capital city of Mizoram’s state, Aizawl, will be linked via Indian Railways via the 51-kilometer-long Bhairabi Sairang project, which will be completed by March 2023.

Dimapur-Kohima Railway Project: Nagaland’s state capital city, Kohima will be connected to the rail system via the 82-kilometer-long Dimapur-Kohima railway construction project. The rail project is expected to be finished by March 2023.

Teteliya Byrnihat Railway Project: Shillong which is the capital of Meghalaya, the state of Meghalaya will be connected with the Indian Railways network via the 22-kilometer-long Teteliya Byrnihat rail project. The railway project is scheduled to be completed by the end of March 2022.

Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland will be connected by Train Before 2023’s End

The North-east Frontier Railways (NFR) is already connecting the capital city of Assam Guwahati (adjacent Capital Dispur), Tripura, as well as Arunachal the capital cities of Pradesh, is currently laying tracks for connecting to the capital cities in three additional states in the north-eastern region: Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland until March 2023.

When the very first train that ran through the region of northeastern India sped through the town of industrialization of Dibrugarh located in the eastern region of Assam. Sanjive Roy, the General Manager of NFR said that the new railroad lines were constructed in order to increase the length of railway lines across three additional capital cities in Northeast India: Imphal (Manipur), Aizawl (Mizoram), and Kohima (Nagaland) which excludes Shillong in Meghalaya as well as Gangtok within Sikkim.

“Work on the railroad line that is broad gauge within Manipur, Mizoram, and Nagaland is going smoothly. Ms. Roy was quoted as telling reporters, “There are some land-related and other environmental problems in Sikkim and Meghalaya, which are causing a delay in extending the railway networks in the two hilly states.”

In the words of the North-east Frontier Railways (NFR) General Manager, NFR has endorsed the electrification of railway lines within the region. In addition, tender-related work is in progress. “Works on the 12.23-kilometer Agartala (Tripura)-Akhaura (Bangladesh) new railway lines are underway, and it will be completed by March next year,” he stated.

The Agartala-Akhaura railroad line will aid in the transportation of goods between these two countries, and will greatly benefit Northeastern India’s states that are landlocked. Its distance from Agartala as well as Kolkata via Bangladesh will be cut by half, by reducing the distance from 1,613 km in high mountainous terrain down to 514 km.

The 12.23 km new India-Bangladesh railway route is connected to the current Agartala railway station. The station has 5.46 kilometers of railway tracks constructed across India (on the edge of the capital city of Agartala) as well as 6.57 kilometers of railway lines laid down in Bangladesh.

The Rs.972-crore plan was completed in January of 2010 in the course of Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina’s visit to New Delhi when she was able to meet the then-Indian Premier Manmohan Singh.

The NFR invested Rs. 1,150 million to expand rail lines to two towns bordering the sub-divisional town which are Sabroom and Belonia — two cities that are located near the Bangladesh border. This has helped in establishing a connection to the country’s railway systems.

Subhanan Chanda, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of the NFR has stated that even though the NFR has seen advancements in many of the states in the N-E region with railroad connections, Sikkim remains off the Indian railway maps.

“Work to provide railway connectivity to Sikkim was approved in 2008-09. The planned railway line will be able to pass through the Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, which could cause numerous environmental concerns that hindered the progress. It is a project at the national level essential to the growth of Sikkim. In addition to being strategically important It is anticipated to improve connectivity for Sikkim, a landlocked state that has borders with three countries which include China, Nepal, and Bhutan when it is completed,” Chanda said.

Based on the CPRO, 41.55 kilometers of the 44.96-kilometer stretch is located situated in West Bengal, and 3.41 kilometers are located in Sikkim. The entire stretch is equipped with the latest technology to enable trains to travel at speeds up to 100 kilometers/hour. It is estimated that the cost of construction will be approximately Rs 8,900 crore from which around Rs 335.52 crore is already invested up to July 2020.

Indian Railways plan to connect the capitals of all states within the northeast. Indian Railways plan to link all capital cities of the state within the region in line with the central government’s strategy to ensure the development of the whole NE region. The Bairabi Sairang Sairang project is already given around 1,000 crores and will be executed in Mizoram’s Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR). The new line will start starting from Bhairabi the line will have four stations: Hortoki, Kawnpui, Mualkhang as well as Sairang.

The railway is aiming for a final date of 2023 to complete the construction. The overall duration of the project is 51.38 kilometers. It will require a total cost in the amount of 5521.45 crores. It will comprise 55 major and minor bridges in addition to five roads over Bridges (ROBs) and six Roads under Bridges (RUBs). The entire project will consist of the construction of several tunnels. The completeness of all the rail connectivity initiatives could result in the upgrading of northeastern Ohio through better transportation infrastructure.

Conclusion

A better train connectivity in North East India will be beneficial to not just the residents of the area, but the whole Northeast region’s economy. State-owned merchants will now be able to transport items for daily use along with construction materials in a lesser cost-efficient, economical, and eco-efficient way. In the same way, farmers will be able to ship their goods to a bigger market across each state for less cost as well as in a quicker manner.
