Indian Railways

The Chennai Division of Southern Indian Railways has announced a big and welcome change for Sleeper Class passengers. Starting January 2026, passengers traveling in non-AC sleeper coaches will also be able to get clean and sanitized bedrolls on request. This is the first time such a facility is being introduced for Sleeper Class passengers, who until now had no access to bedrolls unless they carried their own.

Earlier, the bedroll facility was available only for AC coach passengers. But with many travelers requesting clean bedding during long journeys, the Indian railways has finally approved this new service. Passengers will now be able to request bedrolls by paying a small amount, making their journey more comfortable and hygienic. This new service follows the successful pilot project under NINFRIS (New Innovative Non-Fare Revenue Ideas Scheme) 2023–24. Since the feedback from passengers was positive, the railways has decided to introduce it permanently across selected trains. It will also help railways earn additional revenue.

Indian Railways Update: Clean Bedrolls for Sleeper Passengers from 2026

According to the Southern Indian Railways, this new move will benefit crores of passengers who travel in sleeper class every year. The availability of clean bedding will improve hygiene standards and reduce the discomfort faced by passengers during overnight travel. Long journeys will now become more relaxing, especially for passengers who prefer not to carry extra luggage.

This service will also help Indian railways generate extra income. The Chennai Division expects to earn ₹28,27,653 per year as license fee through this bedroll service. Along with comfort, this becomes a good non-fare revenue opportunity.

Affordable Bedroll Packages for All PassengersIndian Railways

To make the service affordable for all passengers, Southern Railway has introduced three low-cost bedroll options. The ₹50 package includes a bedsheet, a pillow, and a pillow cover. The ₹30 package provides a pillow with a pillow cover, and the ₹20 package gives one bedsheet. These options are designed to fit different needs and budgets.
